Blood Buzz Newsletter – June 2026

Dear Donor,

As we celebrate National Blood Donor Month, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to every donor who continues to give the gift of life. Your generosity helps patients across the Western Cape through some of their toughest moments.

In this edition of Blood Buzz, we share powerful stories that show just how far a single donation can go. You’ll meet Dr Henry Kirby, a retired doctor whose life was saved by blood transfusions, and Dannika Henman, who went from being a leukaemia survivor to Medical Technologist at the Western Cape Blood Service. We also celebrate a grateful mother, Christine Stone, whose child’s life was made possible by donors.

We explore why young donors are so important to the future of blood donation in the Western Cape and share practical guidance for schools and organisations seeking to host a successful blood donation clinic. Don’t miss details on our Battle of the Blood Donors campaign, which helps keep blood stocks strong throughout the winter months.

We’re also looking back at our World Blood Donor Day celebrations and highlighting the incredible donor community that makes our work possible. If you’ve ever wondered where to donate, we’ve included a helpful guide to finding your nearest blood donation clinic. And for something a little lighter, discover what your coffee order says about your blood donor personality. Plus, we unpack the ABO blood group system and bust some common myths about donation.

Be sure to find the link to our new WhatsApp channel in this newsletter here you will find blood stock updates, donor stories, clinic information and more.

As winter settles across the province, we are especially grateful to every donor who continues to make time to donate despite the colder days. If you’re eligible, please keep donating and encourage others to join this life-saving community.

Thank you for being part of our donor family. Together, we continue to give hope and save lives daily.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Best wishes, till next time.
Marike Carli
