How do you manage patients who refuse transfusions?
Some patients decline transfusions due to religious or personal beliefs. When this happens, clinicians should discuss all options carefully and respectfully.
Alternatives include:
- Cell salvage units
- Intravenous iron
- Erythropoietin
These are not always immediately available or suitable in emergencies.
Jehovah’s Witness Patients
These patients commonly refuse blood. Each individual may accept or decline different products, so detailed discussion is essential. Some will accept fractionated products or cell salvage.
If unconscious, look for documentation stating transfusion refusal and confirm with their designated contact.
Jehovah’s Witness Hospital Liaison Committees can assist clinicians.
