FAQ: Can people who have had a COVID-19 vaccination donate blood?

Answer: Yes.

There is no deferral period for people who have had this vaccination provided that they feel fit and do not have any side effects following the injection. This is in line with recommendations from the FDA and other international blood services.

We have been contacted quite frequently by anti-vaxxers who are unhappy that we have adopted this policy. Some people feel that blood donated by a person who has had a COVID vaccination should be labelled as such so that the patient can choose whether to receive this or not. Please note that this is not done and disclosure of the vaccination status of donors is not mandatory. We have been carefully monitoring local and international research, and there is currently no evidence that there is a risk to the patient of receiving blood products from vaccinated donors.
