Overview: Western Cape Blood Service Extra Drop Box Initiative

At Western Cape Blood Service, we are proud to not only save lives through blood donations but also to make a significant impact on the communities we serve. This year, we are excited to launch the Extra Drop Box Initiative that combines the life-saving power of blood donations with giving back to local, deserving causes across the Western Cape.

What is the Extra Drop Box Initiative?

The WCBS Extra Drop Box Initiative allows donors to give back in a unique way. After donating blood, each donor will receive a token of appreciation. Donors can now choose to either keep this token of appreciation or they can choose that WCBS rather donates R15 towards a worthy cause.

How It Works:

  • Donate Blood: Visit one of our WCBS centres to donate blood and receive a token of appreciation as a thank you for your blood donation.
  • Choice: After your donation, you can decide to either keep your token of appreciation or you can decide that WCBS gives R15 to a worthy cause.
  • Making a Difference: If you choose to donate your token of appreciation, WCBS will donate R15 to the chosen cause.
  • Cause Focus: In a two-month cycle, the programme will support a different charity that meets our criteria, with a focus on organisations in the Western Cape that are committed to improving healthcare, education, poverty alleviation, youth development, early childhood development, and animal welfare.

Charity Selection Process:

Each charity partner is carefully selected by the WCBS committee based on the following criteria:

  • Location: Charities must be based in the Western Cape and serve communities within the province.
  • Legal Standing: Only registered non-profit organisations with the legal documents required to receive funding will be selected.
  • Focus Areas: Charities should focus on one or more of the following sectors: healthcare, education, poverty alleviation, youth development, early childhood development, disability, humanitarian, environmental or animal welfare.

Bi-Monthly Impact:

  • Bi-Monthly Charity: A new charity will be featured bi-monthly. For example, in March, we kick off the initiative supporting League of the Friends of the Blind, an organisation dedicated to helping visually impaired individuals and learners in early childhood development.
  • Bi-Monthly Feedback: Donors will be able to read about this initiative on our website and in our newsletter and receive feedback via email if they have signed up for email communication. With six charities supported each year, you’ll have the opportunity to support a diverse range of causes.

Why Participate?

This initiative is more than just about blood donation. It’s an opportunity for you to extend the impact of your generosity beyond blood donation. By donating your token of appreciation to charity, you will help support projects that are creating positive change in the Western Cape’s most vulnerable communities and possibly future blood donor heroes.

How You Can Get Involved:

  • Donate Blood: Give the gift of life at any WCBS centre.
  • Give Back: Give up your token of appreciation and make a lasting impact in our communities.
  • Stay Informed: Sign up for our newsletter to receive updates on the charities you’ve supported and the difference you’ve made.

Together, we can turn every blood donation into a powerful act of giving that extends hope.
