What is Haemovigilance?
Haemovigilance refers to the surveillance system to monitor all adverse events associated with blood donation and transfusion, in order to improve safety of these practises. Active structures are in place to analyse and classify adverse transfusion reactions, however this relies on the timeous and accurate reporting of these incidents to the blood services by clinicians. An annual haemovigilance report is produced by the blood services in South Africa and can be viewed here.
