The Western Cape Blood Service offers careers in a variety of fields, all with one goal: to save lives. We have provided the Western Cape with sufficient safe blood for more than 80 years. Donors and recipients are our priority whilst we manage the entire process of blood collection, component processing, testing, storage and distribution. We use the latest technologies and research to ensure blood product safety, and to excel in the science of transfusion. Each year we collect more than 165 000 units of blood that are used to save or improve the lives of more than 495 000 people. Our quality management system ensures that we maintain consistently high standards of service. We operate according to strict standards based on those of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and South African National Accreditation System (SANAS).
Working at WCBS is not just about a job; it’s about remaining remarkable. We believe our people are the reason for our success. Having the right people helps us to be better at what we do.
Life at WCBS
We aim to attract, develop and retain appropriately-skilled employees by offering attractive market -related remuneration, comprehensive benefits, rewarding good performance, creating development and growth opportunities and ensuring all our people are treated with respect.
Our Employees’ Well-being
At WCBS, we know that it’s difficult for staff to stay engaged at work if they feel unwell physically, mentally or emotionally. This is why we partnered with ICAS in 2020 to implement an Employee Wellness Program (EWP). Our staff are the life-blood of the organisation which is why it is vital for us to provide them with the necessary support to help them live and work at their best. The EWP has been a key business resource and can assist with:
- Improving employee morale and commitment.
- Enhancing performance and productivity.
- Reducing interpersonal conflict amongst staff.
- Developing the skills of managers and supervisors.
In addition to our annual wellness day, our company supports employee wellness through a dedicated Staff Nurse who conducts annual staff medical assessments, hepatitis B antibody screening, and dispenses medication for acute medical conditions and family planning.
Our Organisational Culture is Based on the Following Pillars
- A culture of inclusivity by endorsing our obligation to workforce diversity and inclusion.
- Continuously developing leadership capabilities of our leaders.
- Upholding our values through positive employee engagement.
- Ensuring the physical and mental well-being of our employees.
- Building and sustaining a high-performance culture.
