When we launched the Extra Drop initiative in March 2025, our goal was simple: give blood donors the opportunity to make their impact stretch even further. Six months on, we’re in awe of what you — our donors — have achieved.
Every two months, you’ve chosen to forgo your thank-you token, allowing WCBS to donate R15 on your behalf to a carefully selected charity. And each time, you’ve proven that small sacrifices truly do add up to big change.
Hannah’s Place of Safety – A Haven for the Smallest Voices
In May and June, your Extra Drop supported Hannah’s Place of Safety, a home in Mitchell’s Plain that provides loving, temporary care for abandoned, abused, and neglected babies.
Thanks to 1,399 donors, a generous R20,985 was raised. This vital contribution is helping Hannah’s Place provide safety, comfort, and healing for children aged birth to one year.
As Candice Brink, treasurer at the organisation, shared: “Your kindness helps provide the essentials these children need: safety, comfort, and the chance to begin healing. Because of you, we’re able to continue our mission and be the voice for those who have none.”

Lucky Lucy Foundation – Hope for Paws in Need
In July and August, the Extra Drop turned its focus to four-legged friends. With your help, the Lucky Lucy Foundation, a pro-quality of life animal rescue organisation, received a much-needed boost to continue their work rescuing severely neglected and abused domestic animals. An incredible 1,766 donors opted in, raising R26,490 to support their mission.
Richard Green, chairperson and volunteer, expressed heartfelt gratitude during the cheque handover: “On behalf of the Lucky Lucy Foundation, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Western Cape Blood Service for this remarkable contribution. Receiving the generous amount of R26,490 through the Extra Drop initiative is not only an incredible support to our work but also a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion. It is truly a privilege to be part of such an inspiring initiative that brings people together in the spirit of giving — not only of blood, but of hope, kindness and the resources that make lasting change possible. This funding will allow us to continue providing care, comfort and second chances to the vulnerable animals who rely on us, and for that, we are sincerely thankful.”

What’s Next: Giving Life Through the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR)
For September and October, your Extra Drop will support the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), a non-profit organisation that provides life-saving bone marrow transplants for patients in need.
While 30% of patients find a match within their own family, the remaining 70% rely on strangers willing to step forward. SABMR bridges that gap, searching both locally and internationally to connect patients with donors — and giving countless individuals a second chance at life.
A Ripple Effect of Kindness
With every unit of blood donated, lives are saved. And with every Extra Drop, communities are strengthened, babies are cared for, animals are rescued, and patients are given hope.
We are humbled by your generosity and proud to see how your commitment to saving lives extends beyond blood donation. Together, we’re proving that compassion knows no boundaries — from cribs to kennels, and now those awaiting a lifesaving match. To every donor who has gone the extra mile: thank you. Your Extra Drop is making a world of difference.
