At the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS), giving is in our blood and we’re not just talking about blood donation. We are proud to share how WCBS staff have stepped up to support two incredible local charities through the generous donation of non-perishable food and sanitary products. These contributions will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
The first of our chosen charities for our outreach initiative for the months of June and July was Ladles of Love, who are about more than merely providing meals. It’s about dignity and respect. Their mission is to help people thrive, to provide wholesome and nutritious food to vulnerable people, most of them small children, to support urban farmers in a sustainable way and to empower food entrepreneurs to grow businesses that create jobs. It all started in 2014 with one soup kitchen and has grown exponentially and today serves nearly a million meals a month in the Western Cape as well as in Gauteng and the Northern Cape. “By working together, we can do more, reach further, and uplift communities to support themselves,” shares Ladles of Love.
Our second beneficiary for our outreach initiative was The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, which opened in 1999 in response to the high rates of violence against women and children on the Cape Flats. They provide essential services 365 days a year to abused women and children, all at no cost. Since 2020 their impact has been significant, supporting over 12,000 women and children. More than 85% of those who participated in their programs has successfully transitioned into safer environments. Visit their website to learn more about the amazing work they do.
The kindness and willingness shown by our staff to give back to the community is truly inspirational. We hope that our donors will take pride in knowing that the same compassion that drives you to donate inspires the WCBS team to step up and make a difference. Embodying the values that make us truly remarkable is something we can all be proud of.
