The start of tertiary education is undoubtedly an exciting time for many young people, filled with new opportunities, fresh beginnings, and a sense of hope for the future. It’s a moment when school days are left behind, and students can embrace a new chapter in their lives. This excitement was evident during the recent orientation days at UCT, UWC, and Stellenbosch University, where we recruited new blood donors at university.

WCBS attended these events with our brand new “blood squad”, a new project aimed at first time blood donors. The focus of the project is to be able to give first time donors more time and attention at their first donation clinic and ensure a positive experience in the hope that they will become life-long blood donors. We will track these new donors to see if they return to donate again at the next blood donation clinic on campus. The response was overwhelmingly positive at all three universities. Many students showed strong interest in becoming blood donors, while others who were already part of the blood donation community expressed their commitment to continuing their journey with WCBS.

A total of 184 potential new donors attended orientation day blood squad clinics and an additional 57 individuals registered  for future donation opportunities. From those who attended we collected 58 full units of blood which will go a long way in helping to keep our blood stocks afloat.

It’s heart-warming to see so many young people eager to contribute to such a vital cause right at the start of their university experience. Their enthusiasm and willingness to make a difference will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the lives of those in need of blood donations across the Western Cape. Your support helps us to save lives and ensures a sustainable blood supply for the future.
