The 37th South African National Blood Transfusion Congress (SANBTC) was held from 25-28 August at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre in Johannesburg. With the theme, “Sharing Knowledge, Celebrating Success”, the congress highlights the commitment of the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) to advancing transfusion medicine through collaboration, innovation and recognition of achievements.
Over four days, delegates were treated to an engaging programme featuring an impressive line-up of national and international speakers. WCBS contributed 13 oral presentations and 16 poster presentations emphasiaing our role in shaping the future of transfusion medicine and donor recruitment.
Alongside 17 other exhibitors/sponsors, we also took part in the bustling trade exhibition. Our stand quickly became a favourite spot, with the claw machine arcade game offering a chance to win Blood Buddy plush toys and first aid kits, and our slushies proving to be irresistible.
While the congress was about sharing information, learning and showcasing cutting-edge technologies, it was also about connection, camaraderie and fun. The evening functions delivered on that promise, from the much-anticipated singing competition to the glamorous Oscar-themed gala dinner. While our 80s-inspired rendition of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” didn’t take top prize, we certainly gave the other teams some healthy competition. At the gala, our staff looked the part and enjoyed a memorable evening together.
Congresses like this are vital as they spark thought provoking discussions, create opportunities for knowledge sharing and strengthen bonds through networking. WCBS would like to thank the organisers for delivering such a successful event. We look forward to coming together in 2027 to celebrate more milestones, share knowledge gained and continue to strive for excellence in transfusion medicine.
