What is Blood Type U? Last year, we partnered with a leading creative school to tackle an important challenge; how do we address the critical shortage of youth blood donors in a way that truly connects with students? We wanted to create a campaign that wasn’t just about raising awareness but actively inspiring action, a campaign built for students by students. It had to be bold, fresh, and engaging, something that students would feel proud to be a part of.
That’s how Blood Type U came to life! This campaign redefines blood donation as a key part of student culture, encouraging young people to step up and become donors. It shifts the perception of blood donation from something distant to something personal and empowering. Blood Type U is about ownership, students owning the cause, championing the movement, and making a lasting impact. It highlights both the power of the individual and the strength of collective action.
In February, during orientation week, we’ve seen incredible interest at universities and colleges across the Western Cape, including UWC, Maties, CPUT, UCT, and False Bay College. Every student who donated received exclusive Blood Type U t-shirts and bags featuring their university’s name as a badge of honour. The energy has been inspiring, and we are so grateful for every student who has participated. A huge thank you to the 86 new donors who took the first step in becoming lifesavers!
If you haven’t joined the movement yet, now is the perfect time. Check out our website for upcoming university clinic dates, find a donation site near you, and be part of the Blood Type U legacy. Let’s make 2025 the year students take blood donation to the next level!
