As you might be aware, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) was a victim of a cyber attack on our information systems which took place at the end of July 2021. Although the effects on operations were significant, our service continued uninterrupted.
Contracted experts investigated the incident and there is no evidence to suggest that any personal information from blood donors, blood product recipients, and staff have surfaced on the dark web, nor is there any evidence that any information was used or leaked on any other platform. The attack has been reported to the SA Police Service and the Information Regulator.
Since the attack we have managed to restore the majority of our systems. We would like to reassure our clinicians that we are taking all reasonable additional measures to reduce the possibility that a cyber attack of this nature occurs again.
