For many of us, January is the month we reflect on the previous year and make New Year’s resolutions. Most of 2020 was spent in lockdown as we keep fighting the current COVID-19 pandemic. Even though there is uncertainty regarding the pandemic and what the new year will bring, one thing is certain, and that is that the need for blood and blood products continues.
The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) aims to collect 700 units of blood every day in order to supply the Western Cape with a safe, sufficient blood supply. Every year we also aim to increase our active donor base by at least 2 200 new donors in order to keep up with the demand for blood.
“Thank you to all our blood donors that supported us in 2020 and specifically the Festive Season. We managed to collect 9 070 units over this period and were able to save up to 27 210 lives”, says Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager at WCBS.
“We encourage all blood donors to make saving lives one of their New Year’s resolutions by committing to donating blood at least 4 times a year. This resolution is achievable, you get to save up to 12 lives and as a token of appreciation you will receive the coolest gift ever”, Gevers added. Each donor who achieves this milestone will receive a limited-edition cooler box that also doubles up as a seat, on their 4th donation. Donors who are older than 65 will receive it on their 3rd donation.
If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are healthy on the day of donation and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate. Blood donation takes 30 minutes of your time and you can donate every 56 days.
Donors can rest assured that it is safe to donate blood and that all COVID-19 safety protocols are in place. To find your closest blood donation clinic please download the WCBS app on Android and iOS or click here.
