The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) has enough blood for one day. The blood stock levels have reached a critically low level.
“The contributing factors to the blood shortage are winter (colds and flu), exams, fasting of our Muslim donors (Ramadan) as well as the aftermath of several long week-ends. These factors lead to fewer donations and therefore have a negative impact on our blood stock level. WPBTS aims to maintain a blood stock level of 5 days at all times to ensure we meet the demands of the Western Cape” says Michelle Vermeulen, Corporate Public Relations Officer at WPBTS.
All our blood groups are critically low and we are therefore appealing to everyone in the Western Cape to come and donate blood at a blood donation clinic near you. To find out where you can donate visit www.wpblood.org.za, call 021 507 6300, SMS ‘Blood’ to 33507 or download our app, WP Blood.
If you are older than 16 years and younger than 65, weigh more than 50kg, are healthy on the day of donation and lead a safe sexual lifestyle you can be a blood donor.
Your one donation can save up to three people’s lives.
