The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) blood stocks have been on 1 to 2 days since the start of winter and have, unfortunately, not reached the 5-day level WPBTS aims to maintain.  WPBTS are therefore calling on everyone in the Western Cape who are eligible to donate blood today.

“WPBTS is still experiencing critically low blood stocks levels.  We need donors who are eligible to donate to be the difference in someone’s life and make a life-changing commitment” says Michelle Vermeulen, Corporate Public Relations Officer at WPBTS.

Persons between the ages of 16 and 65, weighing more than 50 kg, who are in general good health and lead a safe lifestyle, are eligible to donate blood.  Donors must remember to eat a substantial meal within three to four hours before donating.

While donors from all blood groups are important, there is a particular need for donors with blood types O and B to donate as stocks of these are more vulnerable to shortfalls.

For more information, SMS “Blood” to 33507 and WPBTS will call you back with information on where to donate.  Donors can also call (021) 507 6300, e-mail info@wpbts.org.za or visit www.wpblood.org.za.  Like us on Facebook (WP Blood), follow us on Twitter (@WPBlood) and/ or Instagram (WP_Blood) or download the WP Blood App (free download on iOS and Android app stores) for blood stock updates.

Your one donation can save up to three people’s lives.
